Christmastime in New York City

NY Voices Interview
Principal Dancer with Parsons Dance, Silva will be performing at the Joyce world premiere in January.
abby2.jpg Silva repeats a common theme throughout our conversation is the idea that dancers have the same concerns and to-do lists that we all have, that it’s a very normal life, such as living in Queens and spending time outdoors to stay fit.  “I do a lot of running, even in winter.  Astoria Park in Queens has a great track.”  Her dancer’s advice to be comfortable and protect walking muscles during a day of city walking?  “Sacrifice vanity to stay warm.  Layer up, wear the right shoes- weather resistant if it’s wet- and stretch a little before or after, calf stretches especially.”

Like most New Yorkers (even ones from New Orleans), Silva enjoys the infrequent snow, “especially when it first is coming down.”  Sledding is best then, but Silva also loves to walk around the neighborhood and notice Christmas trees decorated and displayed in homes along nearby blocks.
